Public pool drains can be deadly for children

Please read this article by the CBS Early Show for information on how dangerous pool drains can be, located in public pools, parks, hotels, schools, spas, hot tubs, and camps. Keep your kids and those in your town safe. Click on the links in the article for more information. Here is a story about a recent drain entrapment involving a five-year-old, and this page shows the type of injury these drains can cause. Please share this link and information.

(CBS) Thousands of public pools may be putting your kids at risk this summer, because they're violating a new federal safety rule.

The National Swimming Pool Foundation estimates that half of all 300,000 public pools, in places such as parks, hotels, schools and camps, have failed to install new anti-entrapment devices aimed at keeping children from getting stuck in the drains.

"Early Show" consumer correspondent Susan Koeppen reported Thursday that drains present hidden hazards in both pools and spas. And they can be deadly. A drain in a hot tub is what killed 7-year-old Virginia Graeme Baker in 2002. The force was so strong, Koeppen reported, two grown men couldn't pull her free from the drain's powerful suction.

But now, new safety standards have been put in place to keep swimmers, especially children from getting trapped. But many pools and spas across the country have yet to comply with the law.

George Pellington of The Pool Safety Council said he has no doubts that many pools still use the unsafe drain covers, which he calls "death traps."

When my husband said one Christmas that he'd gotten me something I'd wanted for a long time, I couldn't imagine what he might have bought. But when I opened his gift and saw this Peerless hand-held shower head, I knew his statement had been absolutely correct!

I love this shower head! I have had a lot of problems with frozen shoulders, and this shower head has made showers much less painful, which has been a huge blessing. This shower head definitely works for me!

Don't forget your kids in the car!

PLEASE READ!

I'm sure everyone has heard that heat can build up inside a car to unbelievable levels in the summer and that you must NEVER leave a child or a pet in a hot car. (A car can get too hot even with the windows cracked open.)

BUT here's something else to make sure to keep in mind. There are people who have accidentally left their children in their carseats in the back seat of the car all day while they went to work! Tragedies have resulted.

How could this happen?

People forget. They have their minds so full of what they're thinking about, and they go on automatic-habit mode. Drive to work. Get out of the car. Lock the door. Rush inside.

What about the child they were supposed to drop off at the sitter's or the day care?

Here's a link to an article that came out last month that talks more about this issue.

And here are some important points from the article I'd like to share with you. Please feel free to share this post, the link, and these points with anyone who could benefit from them. Let's keep all children safe!

In many of the cases, forgotten children are under the age of 1 in rear-facing car seats. Their parents are not sleeping much, which comes into play. "And in an overwhelming majority of cases, there has been a change in routine," [Janette] Fennell explains.

She says the biggest mistake parents can make is thinking this cannot happen to them. "That's what these parents probably thought, too," she says. Fennell shares three ways to help prevent these deadly accidents:

1. Starting today, put a teddy bear or stuffed animal in your child's car seat. When your child is in his or her car seat, put the stuffed animal in the front passenger seat as a visual reminder your child is in the backseat.

2. Keep your lunch bag, employee badge, or purse in the backseat. That way, you'll always reach into your backseat or open your back door when you arrive at your destination.

3. Have an ironclad policy with your day-care provider that if your child does not show up, that person will call a provided list of contacts to confirm his or her whereabouts. "In so many cases, if the day-care provider would have called, tragedy could have been averted," says Fennell.

Outside my window...it's cloudy, gray, and cool. (Yes, again!)

I am thinking...about the additional online applications my husband will be submitting today. Praying for God's will! Thanks to everyone for praying for us :)

I am thankful...that our oldest daughter was not in the car accident that happened last week with her roommate and another girl who lived down the hall at school. She had wanted to go with them but felt that she shouldn't. I'm praising God that she obeyed the leading of the Holy
Spirit. (Yes, I believe it is possible that the Holy Spirit warned at least one of those girls to have someone else drive, but unfortunately, people can rationalize away a warning and do the thing anyway.) The SUV rolled seven times, and the girls were very hurt, but they're out of the hospital and recovering. They were told that they're "lucky to be alive." God is merciful!

I'm also thankful to God that there wasn't an accident involving my youngest daughter and myself this past Friday afternoon. My daughter was driving us home from the grocery store on a back country road, and one of the back tires blew out because of a piece of metal we drove over (neither of us saw it). My daughter did very well keeping control of the car. The tire went flat almost immediately. I thank God, also, that it wasn't raining or storming during that time, especially since my husband walked 2 1/2 miles to get to us so he could stay with the car while we waited for roadside service. We were able to call a friend to come pick my daughter and me up (and our bags of groceries!).

From the kitchen...will come meals that I have no idea about right now! We need to get to the store.

I am wearing...a light blue top and navy shorts.

I am creating...paperwork this week for our homeschool portfolio and other important paperwork I need to mail by the end of the week. (This was on last week's, but I didn't do any of it. I need to do these things this week.)

I am going...to (with my husband's help) declutter around the house during the next couple of weeks.

I am hearing...myself typing on the laptop, the hum of the desktop my husband was using, and the sounds of him in the kitchen preparing to make himself breakfast.

Around the house...there are still dishes and clutter.

One of my favorite things...is God's hand of safety over us (and how the Holy Spirit leads, guides, and warns).

I've been thinking about...way too many things lately!

A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week: my husband buying four new tires (we had to replace them before car inspection later this month anyway); doing homeschool paperwork; preparing and mailing other important paperwork.

Happy Homemaker Monday on Wednesday, July 1

Even though it's Wednesday, I wanted to jump in for my first post on Happy Homemaker Monday.

The weather in my neck of the woods:
Cool, gray, overcast. My husband's longing for sunshine, but I'm just as content to have it cool.

One of my simple pleasures:
Reading. I read a lot. :)

On my bedside table:
The upstairs phone, a large seashell from my youngest where I put my earrings, a flashlight, the alarm clock.

On my TV:
We don't have cable, and our converter box won't work. We have to buy some sort of additional receiver, but we're putting that off for now. We've been watching DVDs.

On the menu for tonight:
Macaroni and cheese with tuna sandwiches on oat nut bread.

On my To Do List:
Getting our homeschool portfolio ready.

New Recipe I tried last week:
I don't think I tried anything new. I don't usually make new things.

In the craft basket:
I have crocheting to finish, but my hands get sore from the fibromyalgia, so I haven't worked on it in a long time. I hope to work on it again soon.

Looking forward to:
Our middle daughter coming home from her one-year school program next month! We haven't seen her since Christmas.

Homemaking Tip for this week:
Wow. This is an interesting section! I really don't know what to share. I'm always looking to learn from others.

Lesson learned the past few days:
Trusting in the Lord. I'm having lots of opportunities to worry, but I'm really trying to leave our new job and possible moving situation in God's hands. He is able, and He is faithful!

Be Safe - DOs and DON'Ts for Firework Safety

Here's an excerpt from an announcement by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (entire article here). Make sure that if your fireworks are legal and safe for all concerned. Happy Canada Day today, and Happy Fourth of July coming up on Saturday!

While the federal government remains committed to stopping the manufacture and sale of illegal fireworks, CPSC encourages consumers who decide to purchase legal fireworks to:

-- Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

-- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

-- Avoid buying fireworks that come in brown paper packaging, as this can often be a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and could pose a danger to consumers.

-- Adults should always supervise fireworks activities. Parents often don’t realize that there are many injuries from sparklers to children under five. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.

-- Never have any portion of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move back a safe distance immediately after lighting.

-- Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully functioned.

-- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

-- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

-- Light one item at a time, then move back quickly.

-- Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

-- After fireworks fully complete their functioning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding to prevent a trash fire.

FOR TODAY, MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2009

Outside my window...it's cloudy, gray, and cool.

I am thinking...about the places my husband will submit online job applications for today. He applied for jobs in 12 locations last Monday and is submitting 9 more applications today (6 for previously applied for locations and 3 for a new location). Praying for God's will! Thanks to everyone for praying for us :)

Update: I'm also thinking about a comforting scripture verse I read this morning: Proverbs 14:26 - "Those who fear the Lord are secure; He will be a place of refuge for their children."

I am thankful...that God hears our prayers and works in our lives. I am counting on Him to lead us and guide us in where (or if) we should move. (The same as last week!)

From the kitchen...will come beef Rice-a-roni with thinly sliced steak in it; scrambled eggs and fried potatoes (I use Hannaford frozen 'southern-style' home fries - yum!); and other meals I planned but can't remember right now. :)

I am wearing...a light blue top and navy shorts.

6 months 'til Christmas!

Christmas is coming! Six more months until the "big day." Many of you may be taking advantage of the nice summer weather to have a garage sale. Now's a great time to sell or discard Christmas items you no longer want. Just think how pleasant it will be when it comes time to decorate your home for the holidays. You won't have boxes of old, rarely (or never) used decorations to sort through. Besides, thoughts of a frosty, white Christmas might cool you off on a sunny, hot summer day! :)

FOR TODAY, MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2009

Outside my window...it's cloudy and gray. We're hoping for good weather (no rain, at least) this week since there are a lot of outdoor games planned for our church's evening Vacation Bible School.

I am thinking...about the places my husband will submit online job applications today. We've been praying about what to do for months. I know moving from here would change my youngest daughter's life so much, but there hasn't been a job opening here so far that will provide what we need so much right now - more income needed to pay off bills and affordable health insurance for the family.

I am thankful...that God hears our prayers and works in our lives. I am counting on Him to lead us and guide us in where (or if) we should move.

From the kitchen...will come spaghetti; chicken Rice-a-Roni with diced chicken and broccoli; more meals not yet planned.

I am wearing...a gray top and navy shorts.

I am creating...(or trying to create) a sense of calm by reminding myself to trust God as I consider how important today could be for our lives with my husband putting in those applications.

I am going...to try to keep putting this job situation in God's hands and leave it there.

I am hearing...myself typing on the laptop and the hum of the desktop my husband is using.

Around the house...there are still dishes and clutter.

One of my favorite things...is feeling the peace of God. Praying for that peace about this job situation. (Update: I just saw this scripture online: Psalm 121: 7-8, "The Lord will keep you from all harm...the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." That's just what I needed to read today! Praise God!)

I've been thinking about...this job situation.

A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week: my youngest daughter and I will be volunteering at our church's VBS; getting a call from my middle daughter after she returns to school from the inner-city missions trip she's on; a Bible Quiz practice.

1. I'm not very interested in cooking.
2. Or decorating.
3. Or entertaining.
4. I like spending a quiet day or evening at home with my family.
5. I don't have any siblings.
6. I love to wear my Crocs flip-flops. So comfy!
7. I'm a very private person, even on a blog.
8. I like where we live (of course, like most places, it has its pros and cons).
9. I wonder if and where we'll move for my husband's new job (he still has a job but wants to change careers).
10. I hope to have a laptop someday. Using the laptop my husband now has for work (personal use is allowed) is much more comfortable than using the desktop.
